Museum Collections
Historic Crab Orchard Museum is a collecting institution that focuses on Appalachian cultural heritage. Our collections are as varied as the people and stories of this area. The wide range of objects maintained by the museum include geological specimens, Native American artifacts from the Big Crab Orchard archaeological site which date from the 1500s, farming equipment and horse-drawn vehicles, tools and materials used by the pioneers on the frontier, musical instruments, weapons of war from the American Revolution through the 20th century, textiles and clothing, home furnishings, and much more. Artifacts are added to the collections based on their connections to Southwest Virginia and Appalachia and their reflection of life in our region from prehistory through the 20th century.
