Volunteer Opportunities

Just like museums everywhere, Historic Crab Orchard Museum & Pioneer Park relies on dozens of volunteers to work with our small staff in serving our community and visitors, and in carrying out our mission.  Volunteering is a part of a life-long learning experience for many people, and so volunteers can expect to learn from the experience with us..

Skills of all kinds are needed, and our volunteer roster includes senior citizens as well as teenagers, and ages in between.   Our visitors are enjoyable to work with, and we offer a pleasant, safe, and convenient work environment and schedule.

We provide our volunteers with whatever instruction and training they require.

Volunteers are recognized in our quarterly newsletter, and we organize an annual luncheon or picnic to help establish new friendships among volunteers and the staff.  After serving a specified number of hours, volunteers enjoy most of the benefits of members -- including Museum Shop discounts.

Among our needs:

  •  Gift Shop and Front Desk staff.

  •  Carpentry, cabinetmaking, exhibit fabrication, and maintenance of the Pioneer Park buildings.

  •  Tour guides, crafts demonstrators, and costumed "living history" interpreters.

  •  Data management including Membership information.

  •  Fundraising support (grant writing, direct contact with businesses, etc.)

  •  Curatorial support.

  •  Research projects.
